Unlike in DS1, lighting a fire sets it as home, not just resting. You have to be very careful with what you light, in no rest runs. Yes, but if you never light the things betwixt bonfire, homeward bones will take you back to the start of the game, even if you light other bonfires. This suddenly stopped working though.
